Hiking
The Virgin Islands National Park covers two-thirds of St. John . With more than 20 trails in the Park to choose from, safe for all skill levels, hiking is one of the most popular activities on St. John. You can take self-guided walks through ruins of sugar plantations and other historic sites while learning about the flora and fauna special to the islands, or explore the boardwalks around salt ponds for bird-watching. The adventure lovers can embark on a hike from idyllic beaches past waterfalls and rocks with petroglyphs, through ancient trees, to the top of mountains with breathtaking views.
Beaches
With its pristine white sand beaches and secluded bays, St. John is a beach-lover's paradise. Spend a glorious day on one of St. John’s famous north-shore beaches managed by the National Park - Salomon/Honeymoon, Hawksnest Bay, Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, Maho Bay, Francis Bay, Leinster Bay and Waterlemon Cay, and Brown Bay. Or, discover one of St. John’s other safe and secluded bays to have a beautiful beach all to yourself, like Peter Bay Beach as Villa Nonna’s guest.
Snorkeling & Diving
Surrounding St. John, an underwater world teeming with vibrant and diverse marine life provides snorkelers and divers of all levels an unrivaled underwater experience. The National Park manages 5,650 acres and the Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument established in 2001 protects an additional 12,708 acres of a marine habitat of coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove shorelines that support sea turtles, corals, and other marine life. The water is warm and crystal clear with temperatures that range from the high 70s in the winter to the mid-80s in the summer. Incredible visibility averages 60 to 100 feet. You can easily swim to underwater snorkel trails from the beach or dive a shipwreck and coral reef by boat, the options are endless.

How do I get to St. John?
St. John does not have an airport. Therefore, you will arrive in St. Thomas and have an option to take an approximately 10-minute ride to Crown Bay or a 30-minute taxi ride to Red Hook, where you will board a ferry for an hour or 20-minute ride to Cruz Bay, St. John, respectively.
Are there grocery stores on St. John?
There are multiple grocery and specialty gourmet stores located only a few minutes’ drive from Villa Nonna to Cruz Bay.
Do I need a passport?
While U.S. Virgin Islands passport requirements state that you do not need a passport to go to St. Thomas, St. Croix, or St. John, having a passport will come in handy because otherwise you will be required to carry two forms of government-issued ID, such as a raised-seal birth certificate and a valid U.S. driver’s license. You will also need a valid U.S. passport if you choose to visit the neighboring British Virgin Islands.
Should I rent a car?
Most visitors choose to rent a car when visiting St. John, as it makes exploring the island much easier. It's recommended to rent a car on St. John.
